Empathy What It Is, Why You Need It And How To Develop More Of It
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Empathy: What It Is, Why You Need It and How to Develop More of It I didnât think of empathy when I decided to learn Spanish. Yet, as I tried to speak to people in San Miguel de Allende, I understood more about them than if I was speaking to them in English. When I got home, I found a recent Fast Company article: Can Learning Another Language Boost Your Empathy? There is an interesting study of kids learning a second language the parents among you might find interesting. I found this quote that applied to me while I was in San Miguel. Learning another language, it seems, may nudge us into territory where we canât help but slow downâ"where we need to seek understanding and commonalities in order to communicate. I definitely slowed down, as I was processing what the other person was saying to me in Spanish. A few years ago the New York Times published a blog: Can Doctors Learn Empathy? It was written for doctors, but it could have just as easily been written for lawyers. I found this interesting: Greater physician empathy has been associated with fewer medical errors, better patient outcomes and more satisfied patients. It also results in fewer malpractice claims and happier doctors. Wouldnât you agree that greater lawyer empathy would be associated with the same things for clients and lawyers? If so, what is empathy and how can you learn to be more empathetic? According to Wikipedia, Empathy is defined as: the capacity to recognize feelings that are being experienced by another. I like to say that it is the ability to walk in anotherâs shoes. As a lawyer, it is the ability to look at things from your clientâs perspective. It is very important for you to understand how your client, or client representative, views the matter you are handling and what is important to him or her. Keep in mind that for a business client your legal work is in the context of their business and for an individual client, your legal work is in the context of their life. You are not born with empathy. You have to develop the skill and practice. A few years ago I was working on a huge contract dispute that took me to Las Vegas every week. After working hard one day, I came back to the hotel and ate at one of the many restaurant bars. I struck up conversations with strangers at the bar and tried to listen, and not judge or offer advice. I used phrases we should use as lawyers, like: I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Should You Share Your Salary History
Should You Share Your Salary History Should You Share Your Salary History Play We should make a deal.Recently, I got an incredible inquiry from an individual from Ladders : It appears that all articles regarding the matter recommend that up-and-comers attempt to retain their pay history from organizations going to make them an offer. What would it be advisable for you to do in the event that you attempt this strategy and the organization approaches a few times for your compensation history, and eventually says that they won't make you a proposal until you give your pay history? All things considered, people, here's the answer.Salary-production rule No. 1 in my book is, Delay compensation talk until there's an offer. So, do you observe this standard thoughtlessly? What's more, what do you do when the business demands ?First, we should recognize that standard No. 1 is the hardest standard to follow in the pay arrangement process. We're prepared from first grade ahead to address questions. At the point when the instructor approached us, we were compensated for furnishing the right response. In the end, we discovered that the individual who responded to the most inquiries accurately was the champ, the valedictorian, the brain! The inconvenience is, in compensation dealings, it's difficult to give the 'right' answer. There are a great deal of wrong answers, and just a couple of right ones. On the off chance that you uncover your pay desires or history, there are several numbers that are excessively high, a lot more that are too low and just a couple of that are 's imply right.'Take this model - the organization is thinking about a bundle in the $150,000 territory, with $115,000 compensation and $35,000 in motivating forces. You're at present gaining a bundle of $180,000 with a base pay of $95,000. They solicit you what you're earning. Two out from the accompanying three answers are wrong:Answer One: $180,000.RESULT: You are downgraded behind up-and-comer No. 2 who's making $145,000 and better accommodates their range.Answer Two: $95,000 base, in addition to considerable bonuses.RESULT: They downgrade you behind up-and-comer No. 2 since they have a thought whom they're searching for, and a $95,000 pay doesn't fit. Or on the other hand, they talk with you completely and make you a lowball offer.Answer Three: How about we save a receptive outlook on that for now.RESULT: The business is compelled to talk with you dependent on abilities, capabilities and capacities, not compensation. This is actually the outcome we want. Now, the inquiry emerges, Im agine a scenario where the organization at last says that they won't make you a proposal until you give your pay history? At this point, the organization has each privilege to demand an answer. From their perspective, it very well may be a tremendous exercise in futility to talk with somebody just to discover they can't bear the cost of that individual. Furthermore, you would prefer not to be viewed as uncooperative or mysterious either. What would it be advisable for you to do? Is there a center ground, a way that won't knock you no longer available, and won't irritated the employer?Yes. There are a few. How about we investigate the one I like to call, We should make a deal. The strategy here is to make a deal with the business. Rather than simply parting with your pay data, you make him 'pay' for it with a guarantee: that he will talk with you, or if nothing else that he not let pay keep you from meeting. That way, you can mention to him what he needs to know and not stress that he' ll take you out of the running. The procedure goes something like this.Employer: What are your as of now earning?Candidate: I'd be happy to share my present income, however my entire pay history. Be that as it may, I believe it's a piece too soon to get into compensation conversations. I'm certain you pay a serious pay, don't you?Employer: Well, indeed, obviously we do.Candidate: Then we shouldn't have any trouble with remuneration if the fit is correct. We should investigate that for the time being, if that is OK?Employer: I'm grieved. It's a piece of our strategy that we have the total image of somebody before we talk with them. I should insist.Candidate: No issue. Would i be able to ask you another question?Employer: Certainly.Candidate: There are a few variables I consider while assessing the fit of a position: the test, the organization culture, area, travel, vocation way, long haul pay and prompt compensation and rewards. Along these lines, if the fit is correct, I'm sure pay w on't be an issue. Does that bode well so far?Employer: Yes.Candidate: OK, here's my inquiry. On the off chance that my present pay is, state, higher than you suspected, or possibly lower than you expected, that won't keep us from having a meeting, will it? In this way, in the event that I reveal to all of you my compensation data, would i be able to be guaranteed that we'll have a meeting one way or the other?Voil! You've played We should put forth a deal.Worst-defense situation, she keeps on demanding that you give her your compensation history. On the off chance that she can't consent to that bargain, press it somewhat further and state, Well, at that point what about this: Since you can't promise me a full meeting, how about we do an underlying investigation of the fit right here. We should check whether I have 80 percent or a greater amount of what you're searching for. Age Discrimination 3 Things You Need to Know - Blog Job Hunting Career Management Solutions
Age Discrimination 3 Things You Need to Know Age discrimination isnât just a concern for grandpa. Young professionals are also seeing the effects of judgement based on their age. Recent studies indicate experiences of age discrimination were more common for younger groups, with those under 25 at least twice as likely to have experienced it than other age groups. While older generations clearly still experience age discrimination especially when looking for a job it may surprise you to discover that the same could happen to you. So what do you need to know about age discrimination? What are the warning signs and what should you do about it? What is age discrimination? In general, age discrimination is referred to as ageism. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), age discrimination involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) less favorably because of their age. Though it may be hard to pinpoint, ageism can be anything from subtle stereotypes about your age (âThose Millennials are just so lazy!â) to overt harassment and discrimination (âSheâs too young to handle this job.â) The Commission also notes discrimination can come from a boss, a supervisor in another area, someone you work with, or someone who isnât employed directly, such as a client or customer. While it should never be the role of the victim to combat ageism, itâs worth knowing how to identify it and with whom it can occur. Are there laws that can protect me? Yes and no. The EEOC passed a law called The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) in 1967, but it only outlaws age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older. So, if youâre a young professional, it may not protect you. However, the EEOC notes some states do have laws to protect younger workers from age discrimination. Plus, with increased buzz about the topic, changes may be on the horizon. The ADEA protects victims in all stages of the employment process, including hiring, pay, layoffs, promotions, assignments, benefits, etc. Itâs also important to note timeframes when possible. Unfortunately, you have either 180 days or 300 days from the date of discrimination to file with the EEOC, this can also vary by state. What are the warning signs? The warning signs of age discrimination may not be black and white, but any sort of repetition or odd behavior are some things you need to note. For instance: Calling you age-related names Harassment Comparing you to older workers Making comments that make you feel less capable Giving a promotion to someone who is clearly not qualified (but older) Favoritism towards others These should be red flags. Be sure to keep track of the actions of your employer or team member, including date, time, and if there was anyone there who can vouch for you. Though age discrimination is a complicated matter, knowing your rights and the warning signs can help you to find better employers, which will in turn give you a better professional experience. What do you think? Did you know about the ADEA? Have you been affected by age discrimination? Photo courtesy of Social Innovation Camp; Flickr

For the vast majority, meeting is nerve-wracking. We so gravely need to state and do the correct things to make sure about the outcomes we need. Its vital we seem certain, expert, present, and ready to express our encounters and dreams. In any case, turning out to be consumed by fears of what others may consider us isn't useful or fun. Things being what they are, during the meeting procedure, whose supposition matters most? Is it your potential bosss? Your imminent collaborators? The HR people? Actually, its yours. Indeed, your conclusions about yourself, your aptitudes, your critical thinking capacities, your work, and your background are of colossal significance. How would you become your own greatest fan? Here are a few techniques for your body, psyche, and heart. Non-verbal communication â" Go Big! When something significant is in question, we will in general react by either extending or contracting. We can adapt to the situation genuinely, inwardly, intellectually, and profoundly, or we can recoil back in those manners. Lets play with contracting and growing genuinely. Any place you are at this moment, make yourself truly littler. Occupy less room. Its harder to inhale, correct? Next, become mindful of the considerations that emerge when you settle on this decision to be little. Does your certainty increment or lessening? Presently, occupy more room. Keep your body and arms open. Notice how much simpler it is to relax? Become mindful of your contemplations and sentiments. Not well wagered you are feeling progressively positive and certain. Occupying more room assembles inward certainty, however it additionally brings about progressively sure non-verbal communication. The words you state positively matter â" and please put time in rehearsing what you might want to share during the meeting â" however beyond a shadow of a doubt. Your non-verbal communication likewise conveys volumes. Similarly as you pick an outfit that bodes well for the activity you are meeting for, you should likewise pick a rawness that serves you. Along these lines, when you share a tale about how you comprehended an advertising issue, drove a group to triumph, or saved a venture from catastrophe, your genuineness will be consistent with your message. Having the option to accept further breaths subsequently of your stance will likewise empower you to quiet yourself all the more effectively and better help your vocal quality. For increasingly master profession counsel, look at the most recent issue of Recruiter.com Magazine: Attitude Affects Body Lets move from physical decisions to issues of mindset. Notice how your body responds as you read the accompanying articulations that may reflect your contemplations before a meeting: Consider the possibility that they ask me an inquiry I dont know the response to. I need to know it all. I must be great. I need to state the entirety of the correct things. What do I potentially bring to the table? Goodness! Was your body jumping for happiness in energized expectation? I question it. More probable, you straightened out and got littler. These kinds of explanations lead to strain and tightening, which make it harder for you to inhale profoundly, to be your full size, to be completely observed, to be completely heard, or to be completely present. Presently, lets attempt an idea that I love: I GOT THIS! Think this to yourself or state it for all to hear. Notice how this affects you in your body. How can it cause you to feel inwardly? How is your relaxing? Presently, contrast this with how you feel when you think or state: Im not prepared for this. Notice how this affects you in your body. How would you feel inwardly? How is your relaxing? Regardless of which proclamation you center around, your resume, abilities, and experience wont change â" however your system and demeanor will. Confronting the Unknown At the point when you meet for another job in an alternate workplace or enter another industry, you encounter the obscure. Theres no explanation you cannot carry those equivalent abilities to new difficulties. Along these lines, heres what you can say to any frightful inquiries and musings powered by your questions: Ill make sense of it. Ive confronted other complex circumstances, and I can confront this one. On a related note, in the event that you were on the opposite side of the meeting table, whom would you rather recruit: an individual who thinks they know it all, or an individual who is open, inquisitive, and anxious to learn new things? Be a Go-Giver Lets stop to consider why you are setting off to that meet in any case. Think about all you would like to receive in return: an occupation, cash, benefits, security, experience, information, regard, opportunity, as well as the opportunity to be a piece of a group. How can it feel in your body to concentrate on all you want to get? Those are on the whole awesome things to make progress toward, however lets try different things with an inconspicuous move. Rather than concentrating on what you would like to get, have a go at considering what you need to share while in the meeting: your insight, your astuteness, your bits of knowledge, your abilities, your energy, your heart, your eagerness, your craving to work together and have an effect, and so on. In the event that this adjustment in center causes you to feel increasingly enabled, progressively broad, and like a potential partner searching for the correct fit, amazing! Make your own rundown of what you might want to share and search for approaches to mesh it into your meeting answers and questions. Here are some other positive considerations to mull over. See which ones impact you, satisfy your body, and increment your certainty: I have confronted the obscure commonly. I have had numerous encounters, and I have a ton to offer. I am here to check whether this chance or this condition is a solid match for me. I am here to give and offer my aptitudes, enthusiasm, and information. I am eager to be interested. I am eager to be available. Whenever you are getting ready for a meeting, be your own greatest fan. Pick non-verbal communication that is open and extensive. Focus on an outlook that carries energy and interest to the meeting experience, as opposed to dread and fear. While you plan, center around what you can provide for the experience. You got this! Why Your Resume Should NEVER Have an Objective Statement
Why Your Resume Should NEVER Have an Objective Statement If youve been perusing resume examples, you might have noticed that some include a resume objective statement and others dont. So what is a resume objective, and, should you use an objective statement on your resume? A resume objective is a statement that says what you wantâ"what specific position, or what professional goals youre trying to achieve. My advice on writing a resume objective? Dont do it. There are better ways to create an effective resume, so do not waste your time writing an objective statementâ"at least dont do it the way its poorly done so often. I get the idea behind a resume objective statement; I really do. You want the employer to know what your job search goals and career goals are. But the problem with objective statements is the way theyre written. Ive never seen an objective on a resume that was not broad and unclear. Theyre basically a waste of crucial real estate on your resume. In the spot where a resume objective usually goes, you could be using strong keywords to describe your qualifications and value to a potential employer rather than telling them what you want from them. There are better ways to let an employer know what position or type of employment youre seekingâ"make it clear in your cover letter, for example. Or put it towards the bottom of your resume rather than at the top where you need to put the most important information about your relevant accomplishments and skill set that will impress the person making hiring decisions. Below, Im going to list a few poorly written resume objective examples. I think youll agree they really dont tell the employer much about the candidate and do absolutely NOTHING for setting the person apart from anyone else applying for a job. Instead, these resume objective examples are self-focused, vague, and boring. And these arent exaggerations from career objective statements I often see on resumes. So here they are, bad sample resume objectives: Bad Objective Statement Number 1: To secure a challenging position with a well-established organization with a stable environment that will lead to a lasting relationship in the field of finance. Bad Objective Statement Number 2: Seeking a position that will enable me to use my strong organizational skills, extensive work experience, educational background, communication skills, and ability to work well with people. Bad Objective Statement Number 3: To obtain a position within an organization that provides the opportunity to use my education and experience to promote the company and myself. During my human resources career, and now, as a professional resume writer, you would be surprised how many resumes I have seen that include these exact statements or something extremely similar. The problem with statements like these (even if youre seeking an entry-level position) is that theyre generic, vague, overused, and they talk about what you wantâ"not what youre capable of offering a prospective employer. In todays job market, employers dont want to hear about what you want (not at first, anyway). They dont care what your career objective isâ"they care how your qualifications can help them. Your resumeâ"especially the first third of itâ"should not be focused on what youre hoping to gain from an employer. Instead, when you write a resume you should be focused on marketing what you can offer the employer. Sure, your career objective may be helpful to this prospective employer, but dont ever frame it as I want this job because its good for my career. When youre writing a resume, frame it in such a way that you are telling them why you are good for their company. If your resume has an objective statementâ"or even an ambiguous career summaryâ"I suggest you take some time to really think about your personal brand, what sets you apart as a candidate, and what value you offer as a professional. Then rewrite this introductory profile so that it is a career summary statement that speaks to who you are, and no one else. Rather than writing an objective statement, write a branding statement that sets you apart from other candidates for the job and gets the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager. The 3 Reasons Your Email Needs to Integrate with Your Recruitment Software
The 3 Reasons Your Email Needs to Integrate with Your Recruitment Software In our digital world, todayâs staffing and recruitment professionals are reliant on email as their primary source of correspondence with candidates and clients. The challenge for many recruitment agencies is managing all the electronic communication in a central location in a quick integrated way. To better understand the need, we asked top managers and professionals about how they are using recruitment software, and if it needs to integrate with their email client in order to effectively run their staffing and recruiting businesses. These recruitment professionals expressed three top reasons email needs to integrate with their recruitment CRM software. 1) Time is money In the fast paced world of recruitment, success means your team is making the most placements they can during their working week. Your teamâs productivity relates to results. âTime is todayâs most precious commodity. We all have 525,600 minutes in a year and when it comes to our work days, we are all fighting for minutes. Studies show that the average office worker spends over a quarter of their day on email. Thatâs 2.5 hours of email. If your email system and your staffing software system arenât integrated, you are losing precious minutes every day, not to mention the frustration of having to duplicate work. Anything that can provide you more minutes to have meaningful communication with your clients and candidates should be the highest priority. The cost of that non-productive time shows up in results, relationships and employee turnover,â says Mary Ann McLaughlin, managing partner, Butler Street. 2) Enhanced email documentation It is critical for your recruiters to document all their correspondence with hiring managers and candidates. Without integration of your email client and your recruitment software, your team has to manually cut and paste their emails into their recruitment software or, worse, work in two systems. We asked Amy Bingham, Managing Partner, Bingham Consulting Professionals, about a world where her recruitment software and email systems were separated. She says: âDivorce is not an option; they need to go to marriage counseling and figure out how to make it work! It is essential for the recruitment software and email software to talk to each other.â With email integration, documenting correspondence is streamlined and seamless within your recruitment software. 3) Better company communication In a recruitment agency, many people, from recruiters to hiring managers to payroll and billing administrators, all may need to interact with one candidate. It is essential that each understands what information the others have shared. Without a central location for all correspondence, misinformation may occur. Or worse, many people will need to be copied-in on or forwarded emails, creating an email pile-up! âEmail is too critical a communication tool for recruiters with both hiring managers and candidates. Email messages must be captured in the front-office system,â says Bingham. Larkin Dailey, CPC, CPS, President, Snelling ATL, says integrating email is: âImportant for saving time, along with efficiency and accuracy of documentation. It also helps because recruitment employees can often forget to do the copy and paste and then important history is not documented.â Luckily, when your email client is working in sync with your recruitment software, it does the work for your team â" all of your important and necessary email communications, tasks, meetings and more are documented within your recruitment software for reference and collaboration. Communication improves, and ultimately, time is saved. Are you ready to experience the ease of email integration with your staffing software?
